American Black Film Festival in Miami Beach, Florida

On June 14th my daughter, Tasha and I arrived to the Loews Miami Beach Hotel to register for the 22nd annual American Black Film Festival (ABFF). Given the recent travel for our book tour, we were grateful that the meeting was local, less than 10 minutes from my home. After registering, we immediately began to network. One of the first people we were introduced to was Tony Brooks, Founder of the South Florida Film Festival. Like many that day, we exchanged information and business cards and ways in which we could work together in the near future. Networking was invigorating as we were very proud to share our newly published book On the Road to Victory: Our Struggle as Immigrants in America and the Spanish version Camino a la Victoria: Nuestra Lucha como Inmigrantes en los Estados Unidos. ABFF had an array of sponsors that included interactive booths that kept everyone entertained.

Day one ABFF: On June 15th we were excited to start the morning at the Betsy Hotel in South Beach. We were excited to attend the Master Class Series taught by Award Winning Actress, Director, and Producer Tasha Smith. Almost 10 years ago my daughter met Tasha Smith and attended the TSAW workshop in New York City. The Master Class was high energy, educational, inspiring, and as motivational as my daughter remembered. In addition to a lecture and didactic portion, there was an interactive portion of the session. It was an opportunity to learn about the film industry and specifically the artistry of acting. The ability to bring a character alive and recognize talent was one of many takeaways.

That same evening we attended The Business of Entertainment with Mona Scott Young at the New World Center located adjacent to the Lincoln Road mall in South Beach. Mona was amazing! She was open and honest about her journey to the top and was so willing to share her recipe for success with the audience. We were even more excited at the opportunity to meet her afterwards.

Day two ABFF: On my daughter’s birthday, June 16th, we attended the Master Class entitled, Packing your idea for TV by Karen Horne and Misha Greene. Karen Horne is the Senior Vice President for Talent Development & Inclusion at NBC Entertainment &Universal Studios. Misha Green is a Writer, Producer, & Show Runner for WGN’s Underground and HBO’s recently announced Love Craft Country. Both instructors were dynamic and engaging. We learned so much about what it takes to create a great pitch and launch a project with a major network film. We also learned about what makes a great script and tips and resources for creating a great script.

That evening we attended another Business of Entertainment with Award Winning Actor Terrence Howard. It was 100% entertaining! To say Terrence has star power and that it factor is an understatement. He captivated the entire auditorium with him charm, humor, and personal life lessons. The 2018 annual meeting cannot come soon enough.
